What Causes Yellow Teeth?
There are many things that change the color of our teeth and turn them that yellow ugly color instead of pearly white. Many may be wondering if there is anything, they can do to ensure their teeth never turn yellow or dingy. I am sorry to say, the answer is no.
Things that contribute to yellow teeth include:
Foods and Drinks
- Coffee

- Not brushing your teeth properly can allow plague to build up on teeth, in between teeth, and along the gum line. This is where the discoloration will begin.
- Not flossing to remove food particles will allow discoloration to begin.
Medications
- Tetracycline is known to discolor teeth when administered to children under the age of eight
- Doxycycline is known to discolor teeth when administered to children under the age of eight
- Radiation of the neck and head can cause discoloration of the teeth
- Chemotherapy of the neck and head can cause discoloration of the teeth
- Mouth rinses and mouthwashes that have chlorhexidine and cetylpyridinium chloride as an ingredient can stain teeth
- Benadryl
- Antipsychotic drugs
- Antihypertensive
Genetics
Some individuals have natural thick enamel whereas others have thinner enamel or not as bright enamel.
Dental products
Amalgam restorations containing silver sulfide can cause the teeth to have gray or black color
Environment
- High levels of fluoride in the water can cause discoloration of the teeth
- Excessive use of fluoride products such as toothpaste or mouth rinses
Trauma
Accidents in which the teeth are involved can cause the teeth to discolor
Age
As we age, the enamel on our teeth begins to wear away. When the enamel begins to diminish, the chances of staining are teeth increases. Not only will the things we eat begin to cause stains, but also even the decrease of enamel can change the color of our teeth.
It is impossible to keep our teeth as white as they were when they first appeared. It is inevitable they will begin to become discolored. In order to keep our teeth as white as possible, good hygiene is the first step. Always visit your dentist regularly. Learn by talking with your dentist about the various teeth whitening solutions and how to help your children keep their white teeth for as long as possible.
Do not leave your little ones to brush their teeth alone. Parents should brush their teeth until they are old enough to brush their teeth correctly. Brushing your children’s teeth as soon as that first tooth appears is the best way to start your child on a good hygiene program, which will stay with them through adulthood. Remember, no matter how you take care of your teeth, they will begin to discolor and you will need to look for teeth whitening products if you wish to keep your teeth as white as possible.
